When it comes to remodeling your home, especially when it comes to remodels that require plumbing work to be done, there are a lot of misconceptions that people have. Sure it’s easy to dream up a new extension to your house, or a new bathroom or kitchen layout.
However, there is a lot to be considered if you hope to make these dreams a reality. Read on to learn more about some of the most common misconceptions people have about home and plumbing remodeling.
It’s Easy to DIY
Now in all fairness, there are some home renovation projects like fixing a hole in a wall, or laying down carpeting, that can be DIY projects. Other more extensive renovation projects, however, may require you to reroute some of your water and sewage pipes. In this case, please know that unless you are a plumbing expert, it will definitely not be easy to remodel your home and reroute your plumbing on your own.
The problem with attempting a major remodel on your own is that you may think you’re saving yourself some money by doing it yourself, but if you miss something, or if an unexpected problem arises, it may end up costing you extra in the long run to have it fixed. That’s why it’s always safer to hire an experienced, licensed professional for any and all plumbing remodeling your home needs.
Permits Are Not Needed
This is an absolute, flat-out falsehood. Permits are required, by my law, for almost any project where you are constructing, expanding, altering, repairing, moving or even demolishing any part of your home. To find out what specific permits your remodeling project requires, refer to local building codes, as these codes can vary slightly from state to state, and even from city to city.
Once again, bypassing pulling a permit may seem like it’s saving you money, but if an inspector passes by and sees that your home has been remodeled and no permits have been pulled, or a nosy neighbor reports it to the city, you could get hit with a pretty hefty fine!
Going Big or Going Home
What do we mean by this? Well, some people are of the school of thought that it is more productive to do all your remodeling in one shot, so you won’t have to deal with the costs and inconveniences of a remodel again in the near future. While it is understandable to want to get everything out of the way as soon as possible, “going big” with your renovations can lead to more inconveniences and higher renovation costs!
"How so," you may ask. In the first place, attempting to tackle several remodeling projects at once can be overwhelming, even if you're not the one doing the actual remodeling. Work on one project may affect the timeline of another project's completion, for example, so it may take longer to regain access to your kitchen, bathroom, or whatever other living areas you may be remodeling. Likewise, having several projects to focus on can lead to small details in construction being overlooked. In this case, it could lead to a costly plumbing issue in the future!
